Fall Playlist

Music is powerful and nostalgic. Certain songs that I once listened to on repeat have the power to take me back in time. I’m trying to be more conscious of what I’m listening to, so I created a list on my phone to keep track of the songs and albums that have defined the season for me. It doesn’t consist of everything I’ve listened to this fall, but it does chronologically include the big hits that I want to remember later. This playlist runs roughly from the end of August/early September to early/mid-November (I cut it off a week or so before One Direction released Made in the A.M.).

On a less happy note, my thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Gene Odom, particularly to his twin children. Mr. Odom died in a plane crash yesterday.

Thoughts | 4

1. One year ago today, I attended the One Direction concert in my city. So much has changed since then, yet much has also remained more or less the same.

2. I haven’t gained or lost weight since going vegan over a week ago, but I feel better about my body. Maybe it’s the diet change itself or maybe I just can’t hate this body when it is working so hard to make a difference in the world. But that begs the question: why can’t I simply respect it for keeping me alive?

3.  Halsey is an extraordinary lyrical talent. She is so utterly poetic and raw and she brings images and emotions to life with her vocal chords.

4. The band Bring Me the Horizon named itself after part of the last quote in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, when Jack says “Now, bring me that horizon.” I think I might love this small detail more than the band’s music, which, by the way, is fantastic.

5. I have my hopes and my theories, but underneath them all, I am Team Aelin. If you know, you know.

6. I think I’ve finally decided where I’m applying early action and it is simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating. Nothing good will come of it, most likely, but at least I’ll know that I gave it my all.

7. My sister is running for student council at her school and she designed the most adorable posters I have ever seen and when I did see them, I was overcome with a gushy feeling of adoration for her. She was already in bed, but I just wanted to squeeze her. (I did today and she did not take it well.)

8. Lately, I’ve been going by a different name in my head than the one I was born with. It feels normal and right and that’s disconcerting for a girl who’s spent the better part of three years searching for another name that fits her wholly.

9. London is endgame, but what about hockey?

10. I am reluctant to begin writing both essays and blog posts because they are often large emotional, mental, and time commitments. I think that sometimes I just don’t know where to start, or if I do, I fear the process will be draining. But I find (and subsequently forget for the next time) that I actually enjoy writing blog posts and don’t mind writing most essays once I’m in the rhythm of thinking and typing and backspacing and reconsidering and then typing again.

Drag Me Down

Drag-me-down-One-directionIt’s been a long time since I’ve done a Song of the Moment post. But I’m finally back again with one, and to no one’s surprise (hopefully), my inspiration for this post is the new One Direction single.

Song: Drag Me Down
Artist: One Direction
Album: Drag Me Down – Single
Source: Bought on iTunes

Favorite Lyrics:
I’ve got fire for a heart
I’m not scared of the dark
You’ve never seen it look so easy
I got a river for a soul
And baby you’re a boat
Baby you’re my only reason

Drag Me Down is the first song One Direction has released since Zayn left the band earlier this year. But never fear, he gave his approval via Twitter:

Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. 🙂 x

This song dropped just as I woke up the morning of my last day in Europe (the day I flew home). I listened to it on repeat in the airport and on both my flights. It’s catchy, has a great beat, and is a slightly different sound for One Direction: it’s a bit darker and more intense sounding than some of their other tunes. The lyrics are repetitive, but the boys switch up parts throughout so it’s never boring. Drag Me Down is unapologetic; I love it. And the guys look so happy in the cover art. Even better, the release was a complete surprise! The Drag Me Down music video was apparently shot a few days ago at the NASA Space Center in Houston, Texas. Needless to say, I am highly anticipating its premiere.

The Happy List (1)

This week I’ve decided to start a little post series called The Happy List. I’ve thought about doing it for awhile, and I think it will be a fun and positive meme to do on the blog. Basically, it’ll just be a quick list of things that have been making me happy lately or that I’m looking forward to soon. This first post pertains to this week.

1. Colder Weather
Our first big cold front of the season arrived today and the crisp, cool weather is a blessed relief from the usual humidity. I even broke out jeans and a flannel today, along with some cute ankle boots. Plus, it gives me a reason to miss swim practice (haha… just kidding).

2. Hockey
There are four Lightning games this week (not to mention the one I went to on Saturday). The team dominated last night on the scoreboard and on the ice against the New York Rangers. The final score was 5-1, with former Rangers captain Ryan Callahan scoring two Lightning goals. It was the first game between the Lightning and Rangers since the captain swap last March and since the summer, the Lightning have acquired two more ex-Rangers: Brian Boyle and Anton Stralman.

3. Europe
I will be traveling to Europe for the first time with my friend and her parents next summer and I could not be more excited. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to go to Europe and I still can’t believe I’ll experience three new countries in less than a year.

4. FOUR
One Direction’s new album released yesterday and needless to say, I’m in love. I think it’s their best album yet; I love every song (though I do have some favorites). I will be listening to this on repeat for awhile, and memorizing all the lyrics- much to my friends’ annoyance.

5. Mockingjay, Part 1
The first installment of Mockingjay, film adaption of the third and final book in the Hunger Games trilogy, premieres Thursday night. I hope to see it with a friend this weekend. I’m a huge fan of the book series and love the film adaptions, as well. Hopefully it won’t be as boring as other part ones have been. Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing it.

6. Babysitting
I desperately need to save money for my summer trip to Europe, so I’m incredibly thankful to have a babysitting gig this Saturday. The kids are super sweet and I like earning my own money; it makes me feel a bit more independent.

7. Essay Deadline Extended
The essay I have to write for my English class about the moral upbringing of Huckleberry Finn in Mark Twain’s famed and controversial novel was originally due this Friday. Thankfully, my teacher pushed the date back to right after Thanksgiving. This took a huge stress off my shoulders this week and I think my essay will be better written with the extra time.

8. Thanksgiving Break
I am wholly looking forward to a week off from school, and I plan to relax, read, and spend time with family and friends. School has been manageable, but tiresome and difficult as of late. I could definitely use some rejuvenation and a mental break. Not to mention, more free time and (hopefully) more sleep!

9. Reading
I have slacked a lot on reading since school started back up in August. I’ve read a few books for English and book club, but only two for pleasure. One of the two was The Young Elites by Marie Lu, an author I adore. I quite enjoyed this novel, told from the perspective of a developing villain. There were several unexpected twists that have me yearning for the next installment to the series. It was unique and unexpected, yet very easy to immerse myself in. I finished it today and have fallen back into reading. I haven’t decided on my next book but I look forward to finding and beginning it!

10. Reign
Reign is a historical fiction-based drama on The CW. It’s set in France in the 16th century and has all the drama, romance, and mystery that a girl like myself craves in a TV show. I stopped watching it toward the end of last season in the spring due to a huge amount of schoolwork, and never caught up over the summer. Season 2 began in October and this past weekend I spent an ungodly number of lazy hours in bed watching all the episodes I’d missed. I’m all caught up now and ready for more!

Well, that’s it. That’s my happy list for the week. Just a few things to keep in mind and help me think positively as I get through the tasks I’d rather not do. Bonne semaine!
