The Happy List (1)

This week I’ve decided to start a little post series called The Happy List. I’ve thought about doing it for awhile, and I think it will be a fun and positive meme to do on the blog. Basically, it’ll just be a quick list of things that have been making me happy lately or that I’m looking forward to soon. This first post pertains to this week.

1. Colder Weather
Our first big cold front of the season arrived today and the crisp, cool weather is a blessed relief from the usual humidity. I even broke out jeans and a flannel today, along with some cute ankle boots. Plus, it gives me a reason to miss swim practice (haha… just kidding).

2. Hockey
There are four Lightning games this week (not to mention the one I went to on Saturday). The team dominated last night on the scoreboard and on the ice against the New York Rangers. The final score was 5-1, with former Rangers captain Ryan Callahan scoring two Lightning goals. It was the first game between the Lightning and Rangers since the captain swap last March and since the summer, the Lightning have acquired two more ex-Rangers: Brian Boyle and Anton Stralman.

3. Europe
I will be traveling to Europe for the first time with my friend and her parents next summer and I could not be more excited. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to go to Europe and I still can’t believe I’ll experience three new countries in less than a year.

4. FOUR
One Direction’s new album released yesterday and needless to say, I’m in love. I think it’s their best album yet; I love every song (though I do have some favorites). I will be listening to this on repeat for awhile, and memorizing all the lyrics- much to my friends’ annoyance.

5. Mockingjay, Part 1
The first installment of Mockingjay, film adaption of the third and final book in the Hunger Games trilogy, premieres Thursday night. I hope to see it with a friend this weekend. I’m a huge fan of the book series and love the film adaptions, as well. Hopefully it won’t be as boring as other part ones have been. Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing it.

6. Babysitting
I desperately need to save money for my summer trip to Europe, so I’m incredibly thankful to have a babysitting gig this Saturday. The kids are super sweet and I like earning my own money; it makes me feel a bit more independent.

7. Essay Deadline Extended
The essay I have to write for my English class about the moral upbringing of Huckleberry Finn in Mark Twain’s famed and controversial novel was originally due this Friday. Thankfully, my teacher pushed the date back to right after Thanksgiving. This took a huge stress off my shoulders this week and I think my essay will be better written with the extra time.

8. Thanksgiving Break
I am wholly looking forward to a week off from school, and I plan to relax, read, and spend time with family and friends. School has been manageable, but tiresome and difficult as of late. I could definitely use some rejuvenation and a mental break. Not to mention, more free time and (hopefully) more sleep!

9. Reading
I have slacked a lot on reading since school started back up in August. I’ve read a few books for English and book club, but only two for pleasure. One of the two was The Young Elites by Marie Lu, an author I adore. I quite enjoyed this novel, told from the perspective of a developing villain. There were several unexpected twists that have me yearning for the next installment to the series. It was unique and unexpected, yet very easy to immerse myself in. I finished it today and have fallen back into reading. I haven’t decided on my next book but I look forward to finding and beginning it!

10. Reign
Reign is a historical fiction-based drama on The CW. It’s set in France in the 16th century and has all the drama, romance, and mystery that a girl like myself craves in a TV show. I stopped watching it toward the end of last season in the spring due to a huge amount of schoolwork, and never caught up over the summer. Season 2 began in October and this past weekend I spent an ungodly number of lazy hours in bed watching all the episodes I’d missed. I’m all caught up now and ready for more!

Well, that’s it. That’s my happy list for the week. Just a few things to keep in mind and help me think positively as I get through the tasks I’d rather not do. Bonne semaine!

Lyrics Lately

These are pieces of lyrics that have really spoken to me or that I’ve just been loving recently. A lot of them I particularly like with the music of the song, so they may look strange just written out.

“Love’s a game, wanna play?”
– Taylor Swift, Blank Space

“Where do broken hearts go?”
– One Direction, Where Do Broken Hearts Go

“It’s all fun and games ’til somebody loses their mind.”
– Taylor Swift, Wonderland

“One night he wakes, strange look on his face. Pauses then says, “You’re my best friend.” And you knew what it was: he is in love.”
– Taylor Swift, You Are In Love

“The bed’s getting cold and you’re not here. The future that we hold is so unclear. But I’m not alive until you call.”
– Selena Gomez, The Heart Wants What It Wants

“How did we end up talking in the first place?… How did we end up here?… Everybody thought you were so insane ‘cause you were so far out of my league.”
– 5 Seconds of Summer, End Up Here

“I hope you find a way to be yourself someday, in weakness or in strength. Change can be amazing. So I pray for the best, I pray for the best for you. I wish you could be honest, I wish you could be honest with me.”
– The Neighbourhood, Honest

“Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate hate… Fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake… I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake. I shake it off, I shake it off.”
– Taylor Swift, Shake It Off

“But you will remember me, remember me for centuries.”
– Fall Out Boy, Centuries

“I’m slowly drifting away wave after wave, wave after wave. I’m slowly drifting (drifting away) and it feels like I’m drowning, pulling against the stream.”
– Mr. Probz, Waves

“Afraid to lose control and caught up in this world, I’ve wasted time, I’ve wasted breath. I think I’ve thought myself to death.”
– KONGOS, Come With Me Now

“So blame it on the night; don’t blame it on me, don’t blame it on me.”
– Calvin Harris feat. John Newman, Blame

“You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve and I have always buried them deep beneath the ground.”
– Bastille, Flaws

“I could’ve been a princess, you’d be a king. Could’ve had a castle, and worn a ring. But no, you let me go and stole my star.”
– Coldplay feat. Rihanna, Princess of China

“‘Cause in a sky, ’cause in a sky full of stars, I think I see you.”
– Coldplay, A Sky Full Of Stars

“She said to me, “Forget what you thought ‘cause good girls are bad girls that haven’t been caught.””
– 5 Seconds of Summer, Good Girls

“She sleeps alone; my heart wants to come home. I wish I was, I wish I was beside you. She lies awake; I’m trying to find the words to say. I wish I was, I wish I was beside you.”
– 5 Seconds of Summer, Beside You

“But hold me fast, hold me fast ‘cause I’m a hopeless wanderer.”
– Mumford & Sons, Hopeless Wanderer

“But oh my heart was flawed; I knew my weakness. So hold my hand; consign me not to darkness. So crawl on my belly ’til the sun goes down, I’ll never wear your broken crown. I took the road and I fucked it all away. Now in this twilight, how dare you speak of grace?”
– Mumford & Sons, Broken Crown

“There’s a drumming noise inside my head that starts when you’re around. I swear that you could hear it; it makes such an almighty sound. Louder than sirens, louder than bells, sweeter than heaven, and hotter than hell.”
– Florence + The Machine, Drumming Song

“Let’s have another toast to the girl almighty. Let’s pray we stay young, stay made of lightning.”
– One Direction, Girl Almighty

“And I know in my heart you’re not a constant star… But I’m not done yet falling for you: fool’s gold.”
– One Direction, Fool’s Gold

Honest

A new Song of the Moment!

Song: Honest
Artist: The Neighbourhood
Album: Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Source: iTunes

Favorite Lyrics:
I hope you find a way to be yourself someday,
In weakness or in strength,
Change can be amazing.
So I pray for the best, I pray for the best for you.
I wish you could be honest

I was scrolling through my Tumblr feed today when I saw a post with lyrics from this song that spoke to me. I searched the song on iTunes straight away and previewed it at least twenty times before listening to the whole song on YouTube ten more times. The chorus relates very well to a situation I’m dealing with right now and sums up some of my feelings regarding it. I haven’t listened to much by The Neighbourhood other than Sweater Weather, but I really like the band’s sound and lyrics. Now I want to see the movie and watch the scene this song is played in! (If it is featured in the movie.) Are there any other standout songs by The Neighbourhood that I should listen to?

Blank Space Music Video

The music video to Taylor Swift’s new single, Blank Space, released today. I love it; I think it’s incredible. I love the luxury portrayed in the video and can I please have every single outfit Taylor wore? I think Taylor’s portrayal of insane girlfriend was hysterical, playing off one of her biggest criticisms. I also adore the dobermans, being a doberman owner myself. And the new guy showing up at the end just reiterates the point of the song: if it doesn’t work out (and it probably won’t), there’s always someone else waiting. The music video is very entertaining, and the song is fantastic. Have a look (listen?)!

disillusioned

We grow up watching
watching Disney movies and
happily-ever-afters

and they don’t tell us

We grow up listening
listening to Taylor Swift and
new beginnings and forever and always

and they don’t tell us

We grow up reading
reading words like stay with me and
true love never dies and soul mates

and they don’t tell us

We grow up with ideas
ideas about warm embraces and
someone to sleep next to when the thunder is loud and the lightning flashes through the cracks in our shutters

and they don’t tell us

We grow up with dreams
dreams of I do and
a happy family and one and only

and still they don’t tell us

We grow up not knowing
not knowing that it’s an illusion
it’s not real it’s fake

We grow up
and they don’t tell us
until it’s too late

They tell us a lie
until we’re so disillusioned with love and
happy endings
that we destroy our chances
of ever finding them.
