Tonight was the first game for the Tampa Bay Lightning since the team was swept by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The game was at home, at the newly renamed Amalie Arena, against the Nashville Predators. It was the 2015 Preseason Home Opener for the Lightning, and they did not disappoint the rather small but enthusiastic crowd of fans that gathered on a Tuesday night. The final score was 4-2, with the Lightning scoring one goal in the first period and three goals in the third. My dad and I left after the second period when the game was 2-1 Predators because he has to get up really early tomorrow morning. 26 seconds before the end of the second period, a linesman was badly injured, so the final seconds were postponed to the start of the third period. There were only five or so players who played with the Lightning last year on the ice tonight, and one of the rookies got into a massive (and totally awesome) fight with a Predators player. That was definitely one of the highlights for me. And it was also great to see Andrei Vasilevsky in goal.
In other hockey news, the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-0 and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0. Poor Steve Mason.
I can’t wait for hockey season to get going in a few weeks. WOO HOO.
